Working on the Game Design Document

This week commences the final countdown towards our final assignment submission. The team is hard at work, I would like to give a shoutout to my valuable teammates Molly, Shashank Kumar Sukumar Singh , Wang and Shelley. Our collective efforts helped us create Rift of the Realms for what it is right now. We plan to continue working on it after the submission and polish it further!

Backstory of the game

A team of brilliant scientists, driven by a thirst for knowledge, built a machine to travel between dimensions. During their first experiment, the machine malfunctioned, trapping them in a precarious limbo between the Light and Dark Realms. Their only hope for escape lies in repairing the broken machine scattered across the Dark Realm.

The stranded scientists, now known as the Lightbringers, must venture into the Dark Realm to retrieve the missing machine parts. Opposing them are the Shadowborn, twisted doppelgangers of the Lightbringers eternally confined to the Dark Realm. Fueled by vengeance and a desire to maintain their power, the Shadowborn will stop at nothing to prevent the Lightbringers from escaping.

Some Gameplay Tweaks

We balanced the game a bit more by tweaking some of the player stats. The DR players are now called the ShadowBorn and the LR players are called The LightBringers. The Lightbringers have 3 lives, they can keep respawning but if they die for a 4th time, its permadeath for them. And the Shadowborn are faster with more damage compared to the lightbringers.

And to spice things up we added traps and gadgets. The traps can be used by the Shadowborn and the gadgets are accessible to the Lightbringers. Both the teams have to use silver coins to upgrade their weapons and to buy traps and gadgets.

Traps and gadgets

We are not introducing traps and gadgets to our game. Some of the concept traps are stated in the Miro board image below.

The gadgets introduced are listed below-

Anti gravity propeller - This gadget tosses the player in the air when they stand on it, it disappears after 5 seconds.

EMP - An electromagnetic pulse that disabled all the nearby traps.

Detector - Reveals all the traps within 50m

Shield - Covers the player with a translucent shield making them immune to damage for 2 seconds.

Invisible Cloak - Makes the players invisible for 15 seconds, still triggers traps but doesn't enable the player light beam.

UI Improvements and Leaderboard

We made some progress on the main menu UI and added a leaderboard after the round ends that shows your rewards and the winning team. It also shows the amount of silver coins earned by the players and who earned the maximum silver coins.

The main menu shows the number of gold coins saved in players' account, there's a functioning shop button. A start option that lets the players enter a match. A controls button that helps the players familiarize themselves with the game controls. A logout and Exit to desktop button.
